From 4 to 12 September CLOC-Via Campesina, FIAN International, the Research Group in Human Rights and Sustainability (GIDHS) made up by the UNESCO chair at the Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña, the Global Campaign for an Agrarian Reform and Real World Radio will organize a Human Rights and International Solidarity Mission with Paraguay after the coup d’état that ousted democratically elected president Fernando Lugo. The mission will assess the human rights situation in peasant communities in Paraguay and it will write a report to be submitted before the United Nations, the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR). Real World Radio will participate in the mission and it will carry out a special coverage of its main developments.

The Platform of Social Organizations for Democracy of Paraguay is holding the final stage of an oral ethical and public trial before the National Congress on Thursday in the country’s capital, Asuncion. The Congress promoted a coup d’état in June, disguised as an impeachment, where the constitutionally elected President, Fernando Lugo, was ousted. Read more

María Olmedo, her brother Luis, and Dolores Lopez are three of the 12 Paraguayan landless people who were arrested in a police operation on June 15, where nearly 50 peasants who were camping in “Marina Cue” plot were evicted, around 35 kilometers from Curuguaty, in Canindeyu department. Eleven landless peasants and six police officers were killed that day. Read more

Adalberto Castro is one of the Paraguayan peasants who has been in prison since the police operation that was carried out in Curuguaty on June 15th and which resulted in the death of eleven landless peasants and six police officers. He lost a brother in the confrontation and he was shot, tortured and death threatened. Now he is telling his story to Real World Radio. Read more

Mariano Castro lives in Yvy Pytã, 30 km from Curuguaty municipality, Canindeyu department, Paraguay. His home is 5 km from the Marina Cue land where on June 15th, the police repression resulted in the murder of 11 landless peasants. Mariano lost one of his sons there, and the other two were injured and are in jail. Read more

The peasants occupying the 2000-hectare land called Marina Cue in Canindeyu department, Paraguay, who were attacked by police officers on June 15th were informed that the lands were going to be granted to them and were preparing to celebrate. They even told this to their families outside the settlement by phone. Read more

Nearly 50 days ago several peasants arrested during the Curuguaty massacre, who were imprisoned in Coronel Oviedo, in Caaguazu department, began a hunger strike. Two of them, Felipe Nery Urbina and Juan Carlos Tilleria, are in delicate health condition. It has been five months since the killing of 11 landless peasants and six police officers. Read more

Several Paraguayan social organizations inaugurated on Wednesday a “Human Rights and International Solidarity Mission” in Asuncion, Paraguay, that will aim to learned about the ‘Caraguaty massacre’ occurred on June 15, when 17 people died in police repression against peasants peasants. The participants of the mission will meet with the families of the victims. Read more
