2013 Special Broadcasts / International Seminar “Food, Water and Energy are not Commodities”
Several organizations from 15 countries met from October 29-31, 2013, in Bilbao, Basque Country to organize the International Seminar “Food, Water and Energy are not Commodities”. Social movements, unions, cooperation institutions and student groups from Europe, America, Africa and Asia participated in the event. The goal of the seminar was to have a collective theoretical discussion in the context of the different crises about the appropriation of natural resources and the increasing pressure on the working class in different parts of the world. They also exchanged specific struggle experiences and discussed future actions to strengthen the unity among struggles.

The Puebla-Panama Plan (now called Mesoamerican Integration and Development Project) and the Initiative for the Integration of the Regional Infrastructure of South America (IIRSA) are two spaces of political coordination in Latin America that promote the construction of large infrastructure projects for the transportation of raw materials. Monica Vargas, member of the Observatory on Debt in Globalization (ODG) says the projects are one of the main physical bases for European capital, but also, because of the resistance they cause, their “Achilles heel”. The Agriculture and Land Issue in Andalucia
With a population of over 8 million people, the autonomous community of Andalucia is one of the regions most seriously affected by the European crisis. Its unemployment rate has reached 36%, in some areas it is as high as 44%. 60% of the young population are unemployed. “In view of this reality you have to fight or die”, said Mari Carmen of the Trade Union of Countryside Workers (SOC, Via Campesina) in her presentation on food at the International Seminar “Food, Water and Energy are not Commodities”, held in Bilbao, Basque Country, from October 29 to 31. International Seminar Denounces Threats to Water and its Communities Around the World
Water privatization and commodification processes were the central issues addressed by the international seminar “Food, Water and Energy are Not Commodities”, held from October 30th to 31st in the Basque Country’s capital, Bilbao.
