Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Teori Zavascki died this afternoon in an airplane crash in Paraty municipality, Rio de Janeiro State. Zavascki was following Lava Jato, the operation by the Brazilian Federal Police that started in 2014 and that is investigating corruption and money laundering cases, among other crimes, involving political and business actors. This Wednesday, May 11, the Brazilian Senate will finally decide whether or not to start an impeachment against President Dilma Rousseff. If confirmed, Dilma would be removed from office for 180 days at the most while an investigation is carried out, which shall be the basis of the decision to remove her permanently. Meanwhile, the Brazilian social movements have been carrying out marches, mobilizations, they are occupying public institutions demanding improvements in public policies, to investigate the cases of corruption involving members of the political right-wing and mainly against the ongoing coup. In several cities of the 27 Brazilian States and approximately 24 capital cities at global level, social movements and organizations mobilized in solidarity with the Brazilian people, chanting “Não vai ter golpe!” ("There will be no coup") The date is not a coincidence. In addition to being part of the agenda of resistance against coup attempts against the government led by Dilma Rousseff, March 31st marked the 52nd anniversary of the last coup d´etat perpetrated in that country.
