The situation has remained tense since then. Now the Rural Landless Workers’ Movement (MST) is warning that a new massacre could take place in San Gabriel, where 450 activists of the organization have occupied lands since last week.
Many demonstrators participated in the action carried out in Southall estate, also in San Gabriel, where Elton Brum was killed and many others were injured.
This time they chose the land of Antoniazzi family, where the MST estimates nearly 400 families could settle.
For this reason they demand the National Institute of Colonization and Agrarian Reform (Incra) and the Ministry of Agriculture Development to take all the political actions to expropriate those improductive estates.
This process had been started by the federal authorities, but it was never finished, according to the MST.
Outside Santa Maria, that is the name of Antoniazzi’s estate, members of the Military Brigade are preventing the access of food to the camp and there is imminent repression.
So far, the MST has reported that the people who have managed to convinced the military that they need health assistance have managed to get out of the occupation.
The miltary take them to the medical consultation and they interrogate them on the way there to know who are the leaders of the protest measure.
“The families are in an actual open air prison”, the MST says.
They also occupied the Incra’s office in Porto Alegre, the capital of Rio Grande do Sul, where there was a street demonstration this morning led by trade unions and grassroots movements in solidarity with the situation of the landless peasants.
