Peruvian indigenous are demonstrating in the province of Loreto, in the Amazon region, to demand Pluspetrol oil corporation to comply with what was agreed on several months ago, after its oil spill in the main water source for the communities of the area.
Radio del Sur reports that nearly 200 community members are blocking the Marañon river and roads in order to demand the oil corporation to pay for the damages, as promised last June.
The communities of Santa Rita de Castilla, Ollanta, Victoria, 7 de Junio, Parinaria, Urinarias and Buenos Aires were affected by the oil spill, which took place when the company’s tanker spilled 300 barrels of crude oil in the river.
At first, the oil corporation had promised to compensate every resident for the damages. It had also promised to deliver medicine and food to the communities.
But the Peruvian media says that Pluspetrol is denying there is crude pollution, so it is not complying with the demands of the communities.
Besides the payment of compensations, the demonstrators also demand Pluspetrol to reforest the area where the oil wells are located and to improve the health conditions of the neighbours, reported Radio Programas del Peru.
