One of the main Argentinean peasant organizations, the Santiago del Estero Peasant Movement (MOCASE), considers food sovereignty and an integral agrarian reform as priorities.

“When we talk about the need to change a model of living, we know that it is not something that can be done by peasants alone, and that´s why we talk about an integral reform. We aim to find an alternative model for the countryside and the city as a whole, and not a model that confronts both areas”, said Ruben Lobos, leader of Mocase, in an interview with Real World Radio.

The Mocase was present at the 4th Americas Social Forum held in Asunción, capital city of Paraguay. There, the movement warned about the environmental impacts caused by the expansion of feedlots on water and air.

“This is a production model controlled by big companies, to standardize flavors, prices and quality. Animals are stressed in feedlots, they are not living in their natural habitat and this has consequences on the food”, said Lobos.

The Mocase is organizing its participation in the first conference of the National Peasant and Indigenous Movement, from September 10-14 in Buenos Aires. The event, in addition, will serve as a preparation exercise for the 5th Meeting of the Latin American Coordination of Rural Organizations (CLOC), which will take place in October, in Quito, capital city of Ecuador.
