The “complicity” of institutions, policies and actors of the European Union in the strengthening of European transnational corporations in Latin America was one of the issues analyzed at the Permanent Peoples Tribunal (PPT) held in Madrid. Sebastián Valdomir, coordinator of the Economic Justice-Resisting Neoliberalism Program from Friends of the Earth International, was in charge of giving a presentation on the subject.

The Tribunal worked on May 14th and 15th on 27 cases of violations to different rights and national and international regulations by big European corporations in Latin America.

Valdomir made reference to the European Investment Bank and the Nordic Investment Bank and the “financial component” through which European corporations manage to exploit their projects.

He also talked about the plans of the EU for Latin America through Association Agreements and Free Trade Agreements, negotiated with Colombia, Peru and Central America. Now, the UE has resumed its negotiations with MERCOSUR, made up by Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay.
