“Women and indigenous people face huge challenges to participate in politics. If there isn’’t a political tool to enable this, we have to create it, and if there is one, we have to implement it,” said independent MP Otilia Lux with reference to the importance of the participation of women in this year’s presidential elections.
She participated in the public forum called Mujeres Tejedoras de Paz (Weavers of Peace), organized by the National Coordination of Widows of Guatemala, CONAVIGUA, Women Transforming the World, MOLOJ and the Debora Foundation.
Lux said that political parties in Guatemala are conservative and gender discrimination and racism are clearly seen. She also made reference to the lack of participation of Guatemalan women in the different political spaces.
She said that women from the rural areas are in disadvantage, their participation is lower and thus their opportunities to be elected are reduced. As an example, she highlighted that the different ministries of the country are run by men, and the same happens in Congress, since most lawmakers are men.
The Forum also analyzed the advances after the signing of the Peace Agreements fourteen years ago.
Rosalina Tuyuc, from the National Coordination of Widows of Guatemala, concluded that the Peace Agreements are not a priority for the government, and this is why the people need to be mobilized.
She also highlighted the participation of women in the process of signing the Peace Agreements, which was never acknowledged.
The leader took the opportunity to denounce that the companies that never agreed with the signing of the Peace have created so-called “humanitarian institutions” to avoid taxes.
