Mobilization in Colombia against the criminalization of peasant life

Tens of peasant, indigenous and social organizations went to Valle del Cauca’s downtown to express their rejection to bill 1518/2012, that aims to weaken peasant culture and open the doors for the full development of the production and exchange components of the Free Trade Agreement with the US.

In particular, this bill turns the commercialization and exchange of native seeds into a crime, which means more control for multinational companies. This is criminalizing peasant, indigenous and black food sovereignty, culture, solidarity and life. "The state policy aims to eliminate peasants, because they are an obstacle for the State", said Ramon Elias, a peasant mobilized in defense of seeds.

“This is the first step”, said Juan Jose, highlighting that several national peasant organizations are preparing a day of action to express their rejection to the laws passed that have led to the deterioration of the quality of life in the countryside, to the loss of lands and to the destruction of food sovereignty.

Peasants are gathered in the National Agrarian Coordination (CNA), which together with other social sectors at national level, and with international groups such as Via Campesina, CLOC, among others, are working and mobilizing for life.
