The destructive advance of industrial shrimp farming, the privatization of coastal areas, hotel projects, the building of hydroelectric megadams, and the so-called Clean Development Mechanism are some of the problems highlighted by environmental activists in the Fifth General Assembly of Redmanglar Internacional that took place in May 20-27. Redmanglar Internacional is made up by organizations of ten Latin American countries.

According to the groups, they are discussing the problems faced by mangroves and the best defense and resistance strategies for the peoples and communities.

At the press conference after opening the assembly, Carlos Salvatierra, Executive Secretary of Redmanglar Internacional, spoke about the threats suffered by the populations and communities living on the mangroves, “one of the most productive ecosystems of the planet, but they are being lost in a rapid way due to the impacts caused by an incorrect development model”.

Along the same lines, Silvia Quiroa Yada, Executive Director of CESTA - Friends of the Earth El Salvador, denounced that mangrove forests in her country "are seriously degraded, by at least 35%, and they are being threatened by the advance of conventional tourism and the building of salt factories and shrimp farms".

CESTA, member of Redmanglar International and host organization of the assembly has been denouncing in the past years the situation suffered in Bahia de Jiquilisco, where there are 700 shrimp companies established.

“Now with the excuse of the climate crisis, the mangroves of Bahia de Jiquilisco have been incorporated as a priority area to promote the ecosystems and rural landscapes restoration program, as part of the “green economy” initiative”, complained the activist.
