Brazilian social movements decided to take to the streets in August. Marches, road blockades, and sit-ins in public offices were the measures adopted to express their claims to the national government.
One of the groups which carried out different actions was the Movement of Dam-Affected People (MAB). Despite the fact that President Luis Inácio “Lula” da Silva acknowledged in a speech that the State owes the MAB money, the payment of compensations still needs to be made. Also, the activists are demanding a review of the current energy model.
Last Friday, for instance, hundreds of MAB and la Vía Campesina demonstrators blockaded a road in Sao Paulo as a measure to protest against the building of a dam on Ribeira do Iguape river, so far the only river free from hydroelectric dams in that Brazilian state.
They denounced that Votorantim group, which promotes the building of the plant, uses up to 4% of the power produced in the country. This amount is the same that what the entire Pernambuco state uses, with over eight million inhabitants. Retour ligne automatique
On the other side, the MAB settled outside the works of Santo Antonio dam, part of the controversial Madeira complex, in Rondonia state.
The organization blames the government and Odebrecht building company for the promotion of an “outrageous privatization” of state goods to generate “profits for a few”.
In addition, in Ceará state approximately 600 MAB activists occupied the Office of Agrarian Development (SDA), to denounce the impacts of Acaua and Aracoiaba dams, which displaced hundreds of peasants who still haven´t received compensation.
Another mobilization was carried out last week by the MAB in Rio Grande do Sul state, San Jorge precisely, where 500 demonstrators jointly discussed the threats on Uruguay River.
