An alarming report comes from El Salvador, where the National Service of Territorial Studies forecasts that the rains in the country will exceed the average level this year.

Besides this fact, which the Service links with the phenomenon known as “El niño” and the high temperatures in the Atlantic Ocean, 15 hurricane systems have been formed in the Pacific Ocean and over 15 more in the Atlantic, which means this will be a very active hurricane season.

Facing this situation, Jose Santos Guevara, of the Association of Communities of Bajo Lempa, said that each year the communities lose their crops, the water is polluted, there is material loss as well.

The strong concern of the communities comes after the government announced the beginning of works in the area, but since the winter has begun they won’t be able to start due to the heavy rains.

These communities, as well as 75,000 residents are in the low basins of the main rivers of El Salvador, so they are still vulnerable to the upcoming rainy season.

Ricardo Navarro, chair of CESTA -Friends of the Earth El Salvador, regretted that the previous governments failed to start the works, even though they had the necessary budget.

He also spoke about the current slow government response to this serious problem for thousands of Salvadorean families, so he made an urgent call to the government to immediately work on contingency plans, otherwise it will have to face a very severe situation.
