Rural Women´s Day
Rural women organizations celebrate their day in Uruguay

With a joint activity, organizations of Uruguayan rural women celebrated the World Rural Women´s Day, and highlighted their role in food sovereignty and the conservation of peasant culture.
The idea to have a Rural Women´s Day began at the 4th UN Conference for Women in Beijing, 1995. Fifteen years later, the number of countries that celebrate this day has increased exponentially.
In Uruguay, the Association of Uruguayan Rural Women (AMRU) and the Network of Rural Women´s Groups (RGMM, member of la Vía Campesina) carried out a joint activity on Friday 15th in Canelones department.
Hortencia Brites from AMRU and Isabel Olivo from the RGMM read the joint declaration where they remember the origin of this day and point out: “we want equal opportunities between men and women, between the rural and the urban areas”.
The declaration also makes reference to the need to change traditional models: “it would be great if anonymous work was turned into cooperative work”, they propose. The statement also points out that rural women in general don´t have access to land or housing.
