Ready and willing

Interview with Pedro Landa, Honduran leader in the fight against mining

In Honduras there are nearly 500 mining projects waiting for the approval of a new legislation by the politicians, who are being harshly questioned by social organizations.

Pedro Landa, of the Honduran Center for the Promotion of Community Development said this in interview with our correspondent Henry Picado at the first meeting of the Mesoamerican movement against the extractive model or “M4”.

Landa believes the new mining bill has been resisted for ten years by local organizations and defended by a “small group of politicians” that operate to favor the mining businessmen.

In any case, Landa believes the Honduran groups would be willing to accept a law that respects the community rights and that will provide constitutional guarantees and the right to self-determination, something not mentioned so far.

The government that emerged after the 2009 coup d’état has been characterized by imposing unilateral decisions and for taking decisions against the Honduran people’s present and future, claims the activist.

Landa says the Mining Law that could be passed in Parliament only secures legal safety to investors and a disastrous future for the environment.

“We are mobilizing to show the politicians that the Honduran people has not been the same after the coup and that we are willing to defend our territories”.
