Marisel Califani, member of the Interior Commission of Salto’s town hall, Uruguay, exposed the “overwhelming use” of agrotoxics in Salto department, Uruguay, which supplies 60% of the country’s fresh products.

In interview with Real World Radio she said agrotoxic use has expanded without controls, so she demanded the Ministry of Public Health to “take action”.

“There are high contamination levels, chronic intoxication of farmers and workers and a lack of serious controls or studies on the subject”.

Calfani also said that products imported from other countries, which are banned under Uruguayan laws, are still being used. The official of Salto’s town hall attended the third National Meeting of the Uruguayan Network of Agroecology (RAU) held on April 13 to 15 in Colonia department. The event focused on “Public policies and agroecology”.

“We have no public policies to defend the consumer, the producers, which are often misled by the companies selling the products. We find it hard to get the State involved in the subject”, she said.

She also reclaimed the role of agroecology as a productive model: “When we talk about agroecology we are talking about a whole system, about the environment in general. We are taking care of our health, of our land. This is what we will leave to our children and grandchildren”.
