At the request of the National Attorney´s Office, a Uruguayan judge halted a project to grow GM soy and maize in the capital city of the country, Montevideo, near farms of small family producers, many of them small-hold producers of organic crops.

Due to the lack of action of authorities such as the Environment Agency, the Municipal government, and the Ministry of Agriculture itself, people organized themselves and filed a legal complaint. Their first victory was a protection measure, which will not allow the cultivation of GM crops to begin until a decision is reached.

On Wednesday, November 18th, there will be a round table where doctors, biologists, and agronomists will inform the community on the effects of GMOs on the health of human beings, natural goods and the environment.

The Round Table is organized by RAPAL, REDES – Friends of the Earth, the Association of Organic Producers, and the Uruguayan Bee-Keepers Association, among others.
