Alicia Muñoz, director of the National Association of Rural and Indigenous Women (Anamuri) from Chile, believes that a good choice of an Executive Power is also important to combat issues like climate change, and ultimately, to save the planet.

“When we choose governments which follow those empires which have always crushed us, we are also giving away all our riches to transnational corporations”, said La Via Campesina´s Chilean delegate, in the framework of the preliminary hearing of the International Climate Justice Tribunal, held in Cochabamba, Bolivia.

There, people agreed on the fact that the only possible solution to global warming needs to take into account the sustainable development model promoted by rural communities.

Muñoz thinks that during the administration of Concertacion de Partidos por la Democracia, the coalition that is in office in Chile since 1990, extractive industries, monocultures, and the hegemony of the capital system have been furthered.

This is why the Chilean leader made reference to the impacts of mining, big hydroelectric plants, forestry and agrofuels on global warming.

“There are peoples in the north of Chile which have no water left, but the big mining companies which continue exploiting the Andes have plenty”, said the representative of the Latin American Coordination of Peasant Organizations (CLOC).
