Despite Honduran de facto authorities had stated they would allow the family of ousted president Manuel Zelaya to leave the country to meet the president in Nicaragua, once the family arrived to the borders, the military forces prevented them from crossing it with their followers.
While the judicial order established that the president´s family could cross the border with the people who joined them, once there the Army prevented Zelaya´s family to continue their way, which was allowed by the judge present there to verify the decision was being followed.
Zelaya´s wife, Xiomara Castro, told Venezolana de Televisión (VTV) Network that the military officers even told her to cross the border by herself, leaving behind her children and the president´s mother.
“The truth is we have lost all guarantees”, said Castro to VTV, and she added that when she was told to cross the border by herself she refused to do so, in spite of the threats from the military officers in Honduran soil.
In addition, Reuters agency published an article quoting a close source to de facto ruler Roberto Micheletti, stating that Micheletti had asked Costa Rican president, Oscar Arias –who is acting as mediator between the constitutional and the de facto governments- to send a trustful representative to convince the coup sectors that it is necessary to accept the negotiation plan, which includes Zelaya´s return.
“Because, as it stands, the proposal would be rejected across the board by the powers that are in the country. He is saying to Arias, ’Help me convince my people,’" the source said.
Arias confirmed that Micheletti has requested him the presence of a trustful representative. According to Reuters, the de facto ruler allegedly asked that person to be former president of the Inter-American Development Bank, Enrique Iglesias.
