Thousands of Honduran people marched yesterday through Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula, as part of a massive demonstration to reject the de facto government set up in the country on June 28th.

“We can´t allow a dictatorship to prevail in our country”, said Xiomara Castro, wife of ousted president Manuel Zelaya, among the demonstrators who were chanting slogans in support of Zelaya, and against the regime led by Roberto Micheletti. Castro participated in the mobilizations in Tegucigalpa, together with her daughter Hortensia, who said that the coup perpetrators are the ones who are afraid because the people will not give up until the return of democracy.

The demonstrators were demanding an end to the state of emergency and claimed the return of President Zelaya, who is currently in Brazil to meet with Brazilian president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, as part of a tour to strengthen the support expressed by the Latin American leaders.

On the mobilizations in Honduras, the police intervened with tear gases against the crowd, and it was reported one person was shot.

In addition, grassroots organization Vía Campesina denounced an attack against its headquarters yesterday evening, when two people shot high caliber guns, and the bullets managed to enter the building where several peasants were temporarily living.

“This act shows once again the repression and the attacks they are carrying out against the social movements in defense of democracy and the constitutional order in the country”, stated Via Campesina Honduras.

After the massive mobilizations, the regime led by Roberto Micheletti imposed again the curfew in the capital city, as an attempt to demobilize the population.
