Links between climate and trade

Interview with researcher from the Global Forest Coalition, Ronnie Hall

Descargar: MP3 (4.2 MB)

Real World Radio interviewed Ronnie Hall, from the Global Forest Coalition in Copenhagen. She said the increase of international trade through the intensive use of oil, with mining activities and activities of the wood industry, might worsen the climate crisis even more. The process of trade liberalization impoverishes the countries and peoples that are already poor and makes them more vulnerable to climate change.

The activist attended the 7th Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization (WTO) held in Geneva, Switzerland, from November 30 through December 2nd. She told Real World Radio that nothing of consequence happened there ahead of the COP 15 on Climate Change in Copenhagen. The governments are more concerned about trade issues, she said.

Hall also talked about the possibility that the WTO’s Doha Round that seeks greater trade liberalization, becomes stronger in 2010 and that the negotiations are resumed, with the serious consequences that this implies for the peoples.

She also talked about one of the mechanisms being discussed at the COP 15 in Copenhagen, known as Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD), which the rich countries and others promote as a carbon offsetting mechanism. Hall said this is really a concerning matter.
