Honduras: Protection to activists and journalists demanded

During a public hearing of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) that took place last week, human rights organizations denounced that the Honduran government is failing to protect the beneficiaries of precautionary measures granted by the Commission, and they also blamed the government for the death of several journalists in Honduras.

The IACHR, an independent body of the Organization of American States, granted precautionary measures to around 300 people who were attacked after the ousting of Honduran President, Manuel Zelaya, in June, 2009. But despite these measures, according to human rights organizations, two beneficiaries were murdered in 2010, and three others were violently attacked, 35 were threatened and nine of them left the country.

The protests were supported by IACHR Rapporteur for Honduras, Felipe Gonzalez. He also said that the resources used by the Honduran government – led by Porfirio Lobo, who took office after illegitimate elections according to the social movements – were not enough to protect the beneficiaries of precautionary measures.

Meanwhile, organizations such as the World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters Latin America and the Caribbean (AMARC ALC), ARTICLE 19 and the International Media Support submitted a report on the situation of journalists in Honduras.

The report was the result of an observation mission which these organizations carried out from August 24th to September 2nd, 2010, and states that Honduras, together with Mexico, is the most dangerous country in the continent for journalists, and highlights that the government failed to protect journalists and to find the people responsible for the murders.

In the past two years, 10 journalists, 30 lawyers and several members of social movements were murdered. Most of these crimes are still unpunished, and the number of violent deaths in the country continues to rise.
