The 6th Week of Biological and Cultural Diversity began in the Guatemalan community of Yalambojoch, in Huehuetenango department. The registration of participants and the coordination according to themes began yesterday.
In the lead up to the 6th Week we interviewed Oscar Galvez and Francisco Rocael, member of the Peoples Council of the West, who told us about the region where the meeting takes place, which has a long history of resistance in defense of the territories.
In this area of Guatemala thousands of people have said no to mining in community consultations. Next November 24th, eight Huehuetenango municipalities will be declared free of mining and megaprojects.
Some of the most important topics to be dealt with during the 6th Week include the big hydroelectric dams, the impact of monoculture plantations, the importance of food sovereignty, the alternative health systems and the specific plans of action for the Mesoamerican social movements.
