The activists marched 200 kilometers during nine days, and when they arrived to the capital city of the country they obtained the attention of the media. Most of the reports highlighted that the delegation of the Indigenous, Peasant and Peoples’ March that met with representatives of the three branches of the government in Guatemala had achieved important agreements.

In fact, they stated that President Otto Perez Molina had taken into account the demands by the organizations and was willing to comply with them.

However, the success of the mobilization should not imply calm waters, among other things because a new negotiation with the authorities is expected to take place on April 17th.

Some of these ideas are included in a document issued by the Indigenous, Peasant and Peoples’ March on March 30th when the media were looking for other news to cover.

“The agreements reached at the meeting with the President should be respected in form, content and approach and in the framework of the initial declaration of this march”, state the organizations.

According to the March, these are agreements that are already included in national laws and international conventions and that the Guatemalan State has not respected.

On the other side, they claim that it is “unethical” to undermine the efforts carried out by indigenous and peasant communities that participated in the march and to try to weaken agreements in terms of content and feasibility.

“It is a lack of responsibility by the President to treat national matters in a superficial way”. If this continues, the President will prove that he can’t fulfill his commitments and therefore is incapable of governing", they warn.
