The former military were convicted for their role in the murder of 201 people in 1982 during Efrain Rios Montt dictatorship, and they were sentenced to 30 years in prison for the death of each one of them, adding another 30 years for crimes against humanity.

The killing took place while the former military were looking for weapons that had purportedly been stolen by guerrilla fighters. Since they did not find them, they accused the villagers of collaborating with the insurgency, so they killed them.

The defendants, who were part of the Kaibil elite brigade, trained by the Guatemalan army in Peten rainforest as part of their counter-insurgent strategy- were former military Carlos Carías López, Daniel Martínez, Reyes Collin Gualip and Manuel Pop. 

Although the convicted plead innocent, the judges considered there was enough evidence to proof their guilt. A piece of evidence that was key in the ruling was the testimony that two former Kaibil members, César Franco and Flavio Pinzón, provided in video conference from Mexico.

During the testimony, where the witnesses claimed the defendants were guilty, they exposed that part of their crimes included throwing children alive into a well after beating them with a club”.

Other investigations on the incidents of Dos Erres agree with this version, since they claim the children had been murdered by getting hit on their heads, and the youngest ones were taken by their feet to crush them against the walls or trees, and they would then throw them into a well.

The families of the victims and activists, finally believe that justice was served in the case of Las Dos Erres community, in a bloody incident where many crimes against humanity were committed during the civil war in Guatemala from 1960 to 1996.
