Unión FENOSA, Gamesa, Endesa, Iberdrola, Acciona, Eoliatec and Preneal are all Spanish corporations, which disembarked in Mexico to operate wind energy projects.
Mexican social organizations are on the alert because of the fast growth of eolic parks across the country, but mainly in Tehuantepec istmus, in the state of Oaxaca.
These groups claim that the purported “clean energy” alternative” far from promoting progress and the respect for the environment, are displacing people from their lands under pressure and deceit”.
In late January, hundreds of people mobilized in the city of La Ventosa. President Felipe Calderon arrived there with a delegation to inagurate a project by Iberdrola, which has been severely questioned by the local communities.
Pressure, deceit, forced displacement, this is the situation that has resulted from the energy projects of Spanish corporations, the opposers to the model claim.
“The community members have been deceived and pressured to lease their lands under contracts for 40 to 60 years, but they were not informed how their lands would be affected”, a document issued by a group of organizations of Oaxaca reads.
Besides, the implementation of these projects has had no repercussion in terms of electric services in the area, since they have neither improved, nor have the fees been reduced.
“Where is the progress, where are the benefits?” wondered the groups from Oaxaca. They filed legal actions to stop these conflicts, although they don’t have big expectations of succeeding.
In the letter they finally demand the Spanish government to assess the impact that these companies are having in Mexico, urging it not to offer them economic, political or diplomatic support.
