An important mobilization took place in Guatemala´s capital city, in which approximately 10,000 people participated to demand the Parliament and the Executive Branch to comply with the Indigenous Peoples´ Identity and Rights Agreement which was signed 14 years ago. The agreement aimed at transforming the government in order to put an end to the racist systems that marginalize native peoples.

A report launched in the framework of the mobilization by the Indigenous and Peasant National Coordination stated that “we have to solve the historical debt with the indigenous people, not granting their lands and territories, their natural resources or implementing aid programs”.

The indigenous people demanded to solve the marginalization they suffer and submitted an initiative that aims at guaranteeing the exercise of their rights.

Some of the measures proposed by the organizations that defend native peoples include the implementation of production projects that benefit the families of small producers. They are also promoting the search for a solution on land conflicts.

Nobel Prize winner, Rigoberta Menchu, joined the mobilization, and stated before the Parliament that what the native peoples want is to end with violence, discrimination and the hunger they suffer.

“We´ve been marginalized with reference to State funds, we want to break silence and demand the authorities to decide in favour of our demands”, stated the native leader, according to several press agencies.

The proposals were submitted to President of the Parliament, Roberto Alejos, who committed himself to present them in Congress. High officials from the Executive Branch were also willing to pay attention to the claims made by the native people and will form a commission made up by indigenous people and governmental authorities to monitor their implementation.
