GroundWork South Africa and their struggle for energy sovereignty

As part of the 40th anniversary of Friends of the Earth International, Bobby Peek, member of the South African environmental group Groundwork – Friends of the Earth South Africa, talked to Real World Radio about the role of this organization in his country, in the continent and in Friends of the Earth International.
Some of the work of this organization includes the rejection to the role of corporate power is sustainable development under the FoEI Resisting Neoliberalism Program.
This is reflected in the struggle the group has been developing against Anglo-Duch oil giant Shell, and the promotion of energy sovereignty within Friends of the Earth.
In South Africa “there are four million homes cooking without electricity, burning coal indoors because they can’t afford electricity, they can’t afford the energy that the government provides, or the government does not provide the energy, and this is a democratic government; but at the same time, that government is giving away more than 60% of our electricity at low cost to multinational companies”, said Peek in the interview that is part of the coverage by Real World Radio on the month of Friends of the Earth 40th anniversary.
