The Honduran elections scheduled for next Sunday are a sham. The international community announced it will not recognize the process for being illegitimate. Shipments of repressive supplies acquired by the de facto regime are entering the country. Hundreds of politicians have withdrawn their candidacies ’en masse’, while the constitutional president is still refuged in a foreign embassy. The resistance is already thinking of new struggle strategies for the “day after”.

The resigning candidates – from different parties – are over a hundred. The list includes presidential and vice presidential candidates, and others like candidates to the House of Representatives, Mayoralties, etc.

One of the politicians who recently withdrew his candidacy was aspiring mayor of the city of San Pedro Sula of the Democratic Unification party, Samuel Madrid, and aspiring MP for the Social Democrat Innovation and Unity party, Gustavo Matute.

Besides, the independent candidate to the presidency, Carlos H. Reyes and the candidate to Vice president for the Liberal Party (the party of Manuel Zelaya, and the original party of dictator Micheletti), Margarita Elvir, have also resigned.

Apart from President and Vice-president, the National Congress, mayors and MPs of the Central American Parliament will also be elected on Sunday.

The National Front against the Coup d’Etat, which comprises peasants, trade unionists, progressive politicians and representatives of other sectors, expressed their recognition to the politicians who withdrew their candidacy for the electoral farce of November 29.

Carlos Reyes, member of the Popular Front, talked to Real World Radio from Tegucigalpa. He pointed out that the mobilization of military and repressive forces has increased in the last hours, while shipments of tear gas and bullets enter the country.

The “democratic army” of the coup regime seems to be needing armed “guards”. In addition, the regime has suspended all surgeries in state hospitals to have beds available.

Reyes also discussed the lack of internal and external legitimacy of the elections. In fact, on Tuesday, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon expressed his concern over the elections to be carried out under the current situation in Honduras.

Carlos Reyes also talked about what the next steps of the Resistance will be and said that the solution they claim is the creation of a Constituent Assembly with the presence of peoples´ organizations.
