Honduras: Curfews suspended - The Resistance takes to the streets

Roberto Micheletti´s coup regime suspended for six hours the curfew established on Monday. The National Front of Resistance against the Coup is calling for a mobilization from the University to Parque Central.

The coup perpetrators established the measure after the arrival of President Manuel Zelaya, who is taking refuge at the Brazilian Embassy, together with 70 other people. Brazilian President, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, urged at the UN´s General Assembly that Zelaya be “immediately reinstated” as Honduran President, and condemned once again the coup d´etat which took place on June 28th.

Leader Rafael Alegria, from Via Campesina Honduras, estimated that approximately 400 members of the Front of Resistance were arrested during the last hours.

The exact number of injured or dead people in the events occurred in the last 48 hours is unknown, among other things due to the fact that the confrontations are taking place in several areas of the country. All footage coming from Tegucigalpa show a situation of war, with the repressive forces choosing violence as their means.

Radio Liberada has reported several confrontations with police officers in different neighborhoods of Tegucigalpa, where people were peacefully demonstrating, among them school teachers. “The repression is only making people to be more and more outraged, strengthening the Resistance”, said to Radio Liberada one of the people interviewed.

Meanwhile, the de facto authorities have established their own concentration camp. Tens of demonstrators are being held in an old baseball field called Chochi Sosa, just like the de facto government of Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet.

Radio Liberada also reports that all Honduran airports have been closed, and they attribute this decision to the prohibition of solidarity international delegations. “Today more than ever we need the help of the international community”, said Bertha Cáceres, from COPINH.

The right-wing media continues with their plays: El Heraldo published this morning “Micheletti is open to dialogue with Mel (Zelaya) if he recognizes the election”, while La Prensa highlighted “the cost of the crisis amounts to 750 million per day”.
