The peoples and the planet should not pay the costs of the international financial crisis. That is the main slogan of the social organizations that will participate in a series of global actions against the foreign debt and International Financial Institutions (IFI), to be held on October 7 and 17.
They claim that “the Wall Street casino” that caused the financial and economic global crisis is working again while the hundreds of millions of people who were thrown into poverty and marginalization feel the so called “recovery” is pointless.
In a public statement, the organizations claim that the peoples of the South “owe nothing, in fact they are the creditors”. And they complain because the solutions to the financial crises have always been “the same failed policies of the past”.
That includes the loans for fossil fuels and agrofuels, the energy and infrastracture megaprojects; the so called Clean Development Mechanisms; the promotion of the carbon markets and the concept of “green capitalism”.
“We, the peoples, have to be united locally and globally to build alternatives of equality and balance for all without debt or domination”, reads the statement.
Some of the demands include: the write-off of the illegitimate debt some Northern governments and corporations have with the peoples of the South, the end to the terrible speculative practices and a call for the World Bank and the credit agencies to stay out of the climate finance.
The program Voice of the Movements prepared a report on these global actions with the contribution of Jubilee South.
