Synthetic biology is a central issue in the discussions taking place at the 13th Conference of the Parties of the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 13), in Cancun, Mexico. Its development raises a lot of concerns among the civil society, for its ethical, ecological and socio-economic impacts.
Mariann Bassey Orovwuje, from Friends of the Earth Nigeria, member of Friends of the Earth International’s (FOEI) delegation at the COP 13, explains in the next video of this ecologist federation (see below) what are the socio-economic impacts of this new industry on small-scale farmers.
On December 6th Bassey had made a statement on behalf of the Civil Society Working Group on Synthetic Biology during a plenary session at the COP, calling for more regulation on synthetic biology. She also said socio economic impacts should be taken into account when doing risk assessment on this technology.
