This was the title of an activity organized by the Europe – Third World Center (CETIM), Friends of the Earth International (FoEI) and the Transnational Institute (TNI), members of the Global Campaign to Dismantle Corporate Power and End Impunity, carried out in parallel to a new session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland and the open-ended intergovernmental working group in charge of elaborating guidelines for a binding treaty on human rights and transnational corporations.
The murder of indigenous leader Berta Cáceres in Honduras, after her relentless struggle in defense of human rights and the Lenca indigenous people and against national and transnational projects that systematically violated these rights (such as the Agua Zarca project), was a key issue dealt with at the activity and at the UN meeting.
Berta was murdered on March 3rd and the activity took place on March 9th. Brid Brennan of the TNI; Jean Ziegler, member of the Advisory Committee of the UN Human Rights Council and former UN special rapporteur on the right to food; Alfred de Zayas, UN independent expert on the promotion of a democratic and equitable international order; María Fernanda Espinosa, permanent Ecuador ambassador to the UN in Geneva and Chair of the Intergovernmental Working Group; and Alberto Villarreal of Friends of the Earth International spoke at the event.
Please see below Brennan and de Zayas´ presentations, thanks to the work by CETIM.
