“We are creating candidacy defense committees for (former) president Lula throughout Brazil. We already have over 4000 committees”, said the head of the Central Workers Union of Brazil (CUT), Regina Cruz, in an interview with Real World Radio. The former president, member of the Workers Party (PT) and former steelworker leader in the 70s, “is the candidate of the social movements of the country” for October national elections, stated Cruz.
Cruz was interviewed by Real World Radio on January 24 in Porto Alegre, in the south of Brazil, where former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was facing trial on charges of passive corruption and money laundering in the framework of the “Lava Jato” case.
“We already know the ruling. It will be difficult to change it, because they are persecuting a worker so that he cannot be president of Brazil again”, said Cruz, but highlighted that CUT supports Lula as candidate in the framework of the Popular Brazil Front.
On January 25, a day before the judicial ruling against Lula, the PT and the former president himself launched his pre-candidacy at CUT´s headquarters in Sao Paulo.
