2015 Special Broadcasts / Pinocchio Awards 2015

The 2015 edition of the Pinocchio Awards is focused on the issue of Climate Change, due to the importance this year of the 21st UN Summit on the same topic. The Pinocchio Awards denounce the corporations that cause most damage to the environment and community rights and hold a “green discourse” about their actions.

This year, 9 companies are nominated, divided in three categories: lobbying, greenwashing and local impacts on communities. You can vote through December 2nd here: http://www.premios-pinocho.org

The Awards are organized by Friends of the Earth France, in collaboration with the Research and Information Center for Development (CRID) and Peuples Solidaires-Action Aid France

    Pinnochio Awards 2015 have been awarded in Paris

    US oil company Chevron, French energy company EDF and bank BNP-Paribas, also from France, were awarded on Thursday with the “Pinocchio Climate Awards” that “recognized” the role of companies that cause serious socio-environmental impacts in different parts of the world and undermine climate policies.     Green Solutions or Greenwash Profiteering?

    Carbon Free = Climate Friendly?

    This year’s international climate talks (COP21) in Paris appear to be sponsored by the same perpetrators guilty of hindering real solutions to climate change. The French electricity company, EDF, has been nominated for the Pinocchio Awards under the category ‘greenwashing.’ The company claims their electricity mix is carbon free and they are presenting themselves as ‘the official partner of a low-carbon world.’ Read more

    The Local Impacts of Financing Coal

    With the Pinocchio Climate Awards approaching, the heat is on to pick this year’s winner in each category of green washing, lobbying, and local impacts. Focusing on the latter, one company appears to be substantially destructive of lives and the climate. BNP Paribas has been nominated due to their involvement as one of the top international banks supporting the expansion of the coal sector by contributing to a whopping 15.6 billion euro to mining and coal-fired power plants.     Climate Smart Agriculture?

    Interview with Audrey Arjoune from Peuples Solidaires and ActionAid France

    This year’s Pinocchio Awards are set out to expose the corporations guiltiest of undermining climate action. Focusing on climate change and food sovereignty, one corporation particularly stands out. Yara, the Norwegian global leader in synthetic fertilisers made this year’s Pinocchio nominee under the category ‘greenwashing.’ According to Audrey Arjoune from Peuples Solidaires and ActionAid France, Yara has been chosen as a Pinocchio Award candidate due to their use of the Global Alliance for ‘climate-smart agriculture’ (GACSA) in an attempt to market their synthetic fertilisers as part of a (green) solution, rather than admitting that it is a major driver of climate change.     A symbol of resistance

    Ken Saro-Wiwa remembered by environmental activists around the world on the 20th anniversary of his death

    Socio-environmental disasters caused by different gas and oil transnational corporations in 1980s in Ogoniland, in the Niger Delta, Nigeria, were the focus of concern for writer and journalist Ken Saro-Wiwa and led him to become involved in the resistance of this people and become a leader for the movement in defense of these lands.
