On the International Day of Peasant Struggles,after a march through the streets of Buenos Aires,from the US Embassy, an imperialistic symbol, to the Argentinean Rural Association, a symbol of agribusiness in the country, the organizers of the 6th Congress of the Latin American Coordination of Countryside Organizations (CLOC-Via Campesina), shared the final statement, which you can read below. While the UN congratulates itself for having “successfully” concluded the 20th Conference of the Parties on Climate Change (COP 20) with a “draft agreement and concrete advances”, the majority of the social movements demanding climate justice in Lima expressed their deep concern over the results of the two weeks of official talks, not due to the lack of advance, but because of the fact that the talks advanced in the opposite direction of the necessary solutions proposed by the movements. Many reasons can explain these fateful outcomes, but two of them are very clear: the corporate capture of the UN and the lack of attention provided by this space to the proposals and demands of the social movements that every year demand strong actions to change a system that among other things is generating the climate crisis. Dipti Bhatnagar, Climate Justice & Energy Co-coordinator from FOEI, present in Lima, discussed how the development of the climate talks has resulted in a market of nature, providing nothing but false solutions as a response to the crisis. On the 7th of December Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung Brasil arranged the seminar: ”The Financialization of Nature and Extracivism: reflections and challenges for the defense of territory and the sovereignty of people”, parallel to the UN Climate talks COP 20, in Lima, Peru. Thomas Fatheuer, author of ’New Economy of Nature’ was one of the invited speakers and discussed how nature is increasingly seen and used as a commodity, and how it is linked to profit. Read more

The Peoples´ Summit taking place in Lima, parallel to the COP 20 on Climate Change, started today with over 50 activities. After the event titled “Exposing false solutions to the climate crisis”, organized by Friends of the Earth International, Real World Radio interviewed the federation´s Chair, Jagoda Munic, to know more about the goals of FoEI in terms of the Summit and the UN talks on climate change that are being held in the Military Headquarters of Peru, which will come to an end on Friday 12.
