Social organizations and movements promoting the Peoples´ Summit from May 14-18, in Madrid, capital city of Spain, welcomed the decision by 10 Presidents of UNASUR (Union of South American Nations) to not recognize Porfirio Lobo as Honduran President. Social movements also highlighted that several Presidents of the region warned that they will not attend the Summit of European Union-Latin America and the Caribbean Heads of State to be held in Madrid in May 17th and 18th due to the Spanish insistence on inviting Lobo.

At a meeting of UNASUR held on Tuesday in Buenos Aires, Argentina, only right wing Colombian and Peruvian governments recognized the Honduran administration which came to office with illegitimate elections carried out after the Coup d´ Etat of June, 2009. The organizers of the Peoples´ Summit Enlazando Alternativas 4, from Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, sent a letter to UNASUR to ask them to “close the doors to the continuation of dictatorships represented today by Porfirio Lobo´s administration”.

Real World Radio interviewed Tom Kucharz, member of the Spanish organization Ecologistas en Accion. Kucharz talked about Europe trade intentions (who will sign an Association Agreement with Colombia and Peru, and is attempting to sign a similar agreement with Central America and to resume negotiations with MERCOSUR), and how the organizations have been working towards the Peoples´ Summit.
