"The democratic process was broken. An impeachment took place without any reason, this was a Parliamentary coup. There are several names for it: an "express coup’; Cristina Kirchner talked about a "soft coup". Three years ago, Honduras became a laboratory for this, and now it is being perfected in Paraguay”, said the ousted Paraguayan President.

Constitutional President Fernando Lugo was interviewed on Friday, June 29th by the International Union of Food Workers (IUF). In this interview, he made reference to the role of private communication media in the parliamentary coup against him and he announced he will travel the country to meet with the resistance to Federico Franco’s dictatorship which is organized in over 40 areas of the country.

“The private communication media that respond to certain interests would like to convey that nothing has happened here, that this was a conventional change of Presidents. At the same time, they don’t inform about the 40 active resistance spots and the international solidarity that confirms that something has happened here”, said Lugo in the interview published on the IUF’s website.

Lugo also made reference to the “peaceful resistance”. “In the 40 protests that took place there was no violence. Today, the bridge with Brazil was blocked for over two hours with Paraguayan and Brazilian people. The bridge with Argentina, in Encarnacion, was also blocked.

People are expressing their opposition, their outrage. This is a healthy and peaceful citizen outrage. But these demonstrations are not covered by the media. We are resorting to the Supreme Court of Justice and the corresponding international bodies such as the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, because we believe this was unfair and the will of the people and the due process guaranties were breached”.

“There have been strong rejections to the coup in seven departments and this will continue because we believe that the will of the people as expressed on April 20th, 2008, was broken with this impeachment or parliamentary coup”, said Lugo.

With reference to the people behind the coup, Lugo was clear:
"Groups that do not show their faces. Economic groups and the traditional political class that does not accept different political practices in the country, political practices that are not based on favours, something common in the traditional parties that are now joined for the first time in this coup".
