Guatemala: 6th Week for Cultural and Biological Diversity

The 6th Mesoamerican Week for Cultural and Biological Diversity will be carried out from November 15th-19th in Huehuetenango, to the North of Guatemala. The activity was called by peoples´ organizations, and aims at strengthening the defense of territories, and the resistance of communities against megaprojects.

The place chosen was Yalambojoch community, in Nentón Municipality. Most part of the border with Mexico is featured by a history of struggles against mining, and the natural wealth of the area is threatened by transnational corporations and megaprojects.

The Mesoamerican Week for Cultural and Biological Diversity was first held in San Cristobal de las Casas, Mexico, and the following editions were carried out in Quetzaltenango (Guatemala, 2002); Honduras, 2003; and El Salvador in 2004. Last year´s edition was also held in Guatemala, in Colotenango municipality.

Food Sovereignty, territories and megaprojects, the neoliberal model, health of the communities, women and youth will be some of the issues which will be addressed from next Sunday.
