In March-April 1990, in Trujillo, Valle del Cauca, Colombia, there was a crime that shook the Colombian population.

The Massacre of Trujillo was a process to exterminate the peasant population and the social leaders of the area, among them Tiberio Fernandez Mafla, by a group made up by drug dealers, and paramilitary and military officers.

Between 1986 and 1994, the group managed to murder approximately 350 inhabitants of the municipality, spreading fear and displacing people, all this with the complicity of civil, military and judicial authorities.

20 years later, Real World Radio joined the victims in the March of Memory and Against Oblivion, a day to resist and denounce impunity.

“Octavio”, whose real name we won´t publish for reasons of safety, shared his testimony about the events which took place two decades ago, which are still remembered and resisted by Trujillo.

A “common grave” was located by the River Cauca for the victims of the Massacre. Esmeralda, family of one of the victims, remembers the bloody days lived in 1990 and also shares her testimony with Real World Radio.

“We are here to remember what happened, how terrible and painful this tragedy was. And we still live with this tragedy, because it´s not easy to forget”, she said.

Real World Radio could also speak to Consuelo Valencia, a witness of the events and a victim of the repression. “There were no people from the guerrilla here, we were just peasants protesting peacefully”, said Consuelo. Her son, Arley, 14-years old, was kidnapped and tortured by the army, and he is still missing.
