During this weekend, social organizations and environmental citizen assemblies from Argentina and Chile are carrying out a “Binational Mobilization for Glaciers”, and a protest in rejection to the mining project shared by both countries, Pascua Lama, from the mining transnational Barrick Gold, which is starting its exploitation stage.

These joint actions were planned during the latest meeting called by the Union of Citizen Assemblies in San Juan Province, in which a group of Chilean environmental activists participated, and analyzed the damages caused to the Andes by the lack of protection to glaciers.

The activities on the Argentinean side will be held in San Juan, Mendoza and Buenos Aires provinces, and will aim at demanding the ratification of the “Minimum Budget for the Protection of Glaciers Bill”, which was vetoed by the Executive Branch in November 2008, thus opening the doors to Pascua Lama. On the Chilean side, the 6th March for Life will be carried out against the looting and destruction of Valle del Huasco, denouncing the complicity and indifference of the local authorities.
