The International Day Against Dams is commemorated every March 14th, but that doesn´t mean the mobilizations won´t last until the following week. Many of these activities are framed in the preparations for the World Water Day, on March 22nd.

The international coordination to carry out these struggles continues. Between April 22nd and April 25th, in Chiriqui Province, Panama, the 5th Mesoamerican Meeting of the Latin American Network against Dams and for Rivers (Redlar) will be carried out. This meeting expects the participation of approximately 500 people.

In addition, Redlar has already decided that their next Latin American meeting next year will be held in Mexico, and there are enough reasons to base this choice, since the country has numerous conflicts related to the building of hydroelectric dams.

During the last few days, in Oaxaca state, Mexico, several activities to denounce the abuses by the Federal Commission of Electricity (CFE) against the citizenship were carried out. This state organization is one of the main promoters of the building of hydroelectric mega-dams.

The CFE is also being severely questioned in Nayarit State, where El Cajón dam was built, since the promises done by the organization to the population a year ago have not been complied with.

A better quality of lives, unlimited access to fisheries and a good economic compensation were the state proposals which allowed for the energetic initiative to take place, state the local organizations mobilized this week.

The impacted organizations have been long denouncing the “violations and arbitrariness” of the CFE and its complicated experience could be useful for other communities, which are hesitating whether to accept this type of infrastructure projects or not.

This is the case of the population of Temacapulín city, in Mexico, who could be affected by El Zapotillo dam. One of its residents, Gabriel Espinoza, denounced a few hours ago that the land expropriation in Temacapulín to continue building El Zapotillo dam is “unjust” and he blamed the state authorities for this outrage.
