The coup d’État in Paraguay that ousted President Fernando Lugo last June 22, benefits the land owners and the transnational corporations that operate in the country and “it was actually not only a coup against the Paraguayan people but a coup against the whole process of progressive change that is taking place in Latin America and against the re-colonization of the United States”, said João Pedro Stédile, leader of the National Coordination of the Rural Landless Workers’ Movement (MST) in a video interview done by La Via Campesina in Brazil.

“In the recent years the US policy has been to try to put obstacles to the governments that are doing independent politics, like Mercosur governments and Venezuela”, said Stédile. In his opinion the reasons expressed against Lugo in the impeachment against him are not believable and it goes to show that “elites and the local oligarchies have the nerve to ally to use old tricks”.

The sociologist and peasant leader says the contradictions that surfaced after the coup in Paraguay will strengthen the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) and the Community of Latin American and Caribeean States (CELAC) to defend the social and political victories over the US hegemony.

Paraguay’s membership from MERCOSUR was removed and the Paraguayan regime was indefinitely isolated after the first High Level Meeting of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) of follow up on Paraguay.

The group will not have any contact with Federico Franco’s administration, who is in power after the Parliament impeached and ousted Fernando Lugo without granting him the right to defense, Salomon Lerner told Prensa Latina.

A state report was published on Tuesday revealing emblematic cases or irregular land grabbing operations by politicians and large estate owners, while the situation of thousands of Paraguayan families who demand land to work and live gets worse.

The previous administrations, especially Alfredo Stroessner’s (1954-1989), favored leaders of the Colorado Party that backed the regime and officials.

The reports of the intervention of the Institute of Rural and Land Development come to light again in a project submitted by Federico Franco, who replaced Lugo in the presidency and seeks to sell lands to the current residents.

The plan was rejected by the peasant organizations, which calls for the State to nationalize the lands and to distribute them among the families in need.
